1. Understand and determine the purpose of your business website

Some business owners just want a website, they just want it to be up there so everybody knows they have a website too. That’s a very bad mindset in this day and age. Your website is the front gate to your business, so you must determine the purpose and the goal of the website

When your potential customer lands on your website, they should be able to understand what your business is about and they should be able to navigate easily through your website, the goal you want the user to achieve should easily be achievable when they are navigating through your website.

2. Get a domain name

A domain name is your website’s unique address.

While it is very common for businesses to have domain names that are the same as their business names (such as jumia.com), you can pick a domain name to include any text phrase you want, as long as it’s not already been taken.

For example, the domain name for my company website is www.springital.com. For businesses, it’s important to think about how your domain will be relevant to what you do. It’s the first contact a lot of people will have with your site, so make it count.

There are two costs associated with getting your own domain name:

  2. The cost of keeping your domain name registered every year.

A domain name typically costs around $10 to $15 to purchase, and a similar amount to keep it registered in your name every year.

If someone already owns the domain name you want, you’ll need to select a different domain name, or it’s possible to reach out to the owner to buy it.

3. Get a personalized email address

To make your business look more credible and professional, you will need a custom email address. For example info@springital.com looks credible and established than springital@gmail.com.

Getting a custom business email address is quick, cheap, and fairly easy. I will recommend you use Zohomail.

4. Choose your web hosting provider

Once you’ve chosen a domain, the next step is to decide where to host your website. A host is the service that actually stores your website and transmits it to online visitors.

Depending on your budget, you can follow two different routes. A shared web host, the least-expensive option, means you’ll share a server with other sites.

Dedicated hosting costs significantly more, but it means that you get your own private server and won’t have to compete with other sites that could drag down your speed

I recommend using Namecheap. Their customer service is top notch and their server is fast.

5. Design your website

In this phase, you have the option of either building from scratch with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP e.t.c or using a Content Management System CMS like the WordPress, Wix, Weebly, Shopify etc.

If you are not good with codes it’s best you use the CMS, I will recommend WordPress not just because it’s the most used CMS platform but because of its robustness over the others.

You can also build your e commerce website on WordPress using woo commerce plugin, but if you are new to using WordPress, I might advise you go for Shopify, it will be much easier for you to get started and its basically for e-commerce website. It’s on a subscription basis.

6. Create your website content

Website content is the copy you write for the pages on your website. Business websites work best when they’re simple, clear, and easy to navigate, with straightforward text and a single call to action on each page.

Business websites also tend to have five essential pages, including home, products (or services), about us, blog, and contact us pages. As you create these pages, make sure they are optimized for mobile devices.

Create Your Content

To begin, write out the copy and select images you want to include on your home, product or services, about us, and contact pages. In addition, draft out some initial content to publish on your blog.

  • Homepage: The homepage is the first page most users visits on your website, so it should be optimized to give users a unique experience, you should include the name of your business, where you’re located, and a simple pitch that includes a few lines about what makes you unique and why customers should choose your business.
  • Products or services: This page should offer details about the products you sell or services you provide. Spend one to five sentences describing each type of product or service you offer and then list their prices.
  • About us: Provide your company background and list organizational memberships like the Better Business Bureau. Also include customer testimonials; these help your company build more trust and credibility.
  • Blog: To start a blog, create an editorial calendar to determine the blog content that will help you connect with your customers and community. Then, write the content you want to appear on your blog when you launch your website.
  • Contact us: Your address, email, phone number, the hours you are open for business, and links to any social media accounts such as Twitter and Facebook should appear on this page. You should also embed a Google Map, if applicable.

7. Optimize your website for search engine

You see, it’s all very well and good having a beautiful website, and adding that all-important contact page to encourage your customers to connect with you. You can even add an interactive Google Map app that will lead them to your door. But if your customers never see your website because it never makes it to page one of the search engine results, then all your hard work will be in vain.
